With just a few hours left before 2009 comes to an end, I want to talk about one Nokia service that really stood out for me – Ovi Maps. Why?
The GPS reception on most Nokia devices is pretty solid with AGPS.
Every device comes bundled with about 3 months of free navigation.
The navigation experience itself is good.
The Nokia Map data for India has recently been updated and covers a lot more cities.
A little while I was in New Delhi for a month’s time and as you can imagine, being new to the city I had no clue of the routes there and was completely dependent on my Nokia devices to take me to work, recreation and then back home. Based on an earlier experience (Nokia N95) when map data was shoddy, GPS connectivity not as robust, I was not expecting much.
Nevertheless I loaded Ovi Maps 3 onto both my N97 and E75 and set out. Surprisingly the search functionality was not that bad and I was able to reach work and back home without an issue. The application probably took a longer route, but I was grateful that it at least got me home. But when it came to looking for a restaurant or similar places, I found that using Google Maps to search for and save a location and then using Ovi Maps 3.0 to navigate to that places worked beautifully.

If you own the N900 or the N97, there is good news for you. Both devices are expected to receive firmware updates very soon. The not so exciting news is that both firmware releases with be aimed at bug fixes rather than additing new functionality.
According to Eldar Murtazin, the N97 FW release was finalized on the 25th of this month and it will soon be available for download. The release is being labelled as FW 2.1.
The release for the N900 on the other hand is being called Fremantle PR1.1 and has already been send to a community contributors across the maemo.org community for the purpose of bug reporting. There is no word on when it will be available. Benefits from this release will include an even snappier performance, but if portrait mode support is what you were looking for, you will need to wait a little more.

Nokia is going to hold a parallel event to the MWC and that too walking distance from where the MWC venue. This means that you can cheer up again and get excited for shiny new devices what will probably be revealed at the event.
In Barcelona our goal is to create an atmosphere designed to encourage conversations among industry peers. In this comfortable setting you will relax as you learn more about Nokia solutions and services. In this video I look at the web browser on the E72 and its evolution from its predecessor, the E71. The major points of improvement are the stability and the ability to download any file irrespective of whether the phone recognizes it or not. The new browser also has a couple of tricks up its sleeve, watch the video to find out.
A trio of old Nseries devices, the N82 and both variants of the N95 have been given a firmware update and are upto v35. There is no detailed changelog yet, but you can expect under the hood tweaks and bug fixes to make your experience faster and even more stable.
Before you update, make sure you back your device as the update will wipe your phone memory. The N82 does support user-data-preservation (UDP) but it is still advisable to backup just in-case. It is actually great to see Nokia continue to support devices that are old and already in excellent shape.
In order to update, download the Nokia Software Updater from here, connect the device in PC Suite mode and launch the application on the PC.
